Challenging the Status Quo: Why We Need to Break Free

We have all heard the phrase, "That's just how things are." Think of it, if everyone accepted the status quo, nothing would ever change. Progress happens only when someone dares to question the way things are done.

I remember my friend, who worked in an organization where things had been done the same way for decades. Whenever she suggested a new approach, the response was always, "This is how we've always done it." At first, she went along with it. But eventually, she began to question whether doing things the same old way was the best.

Think about it. If we never questioned the status quo, we would still be in an era where certain groups were denied basic rights, global connectivity was unimaginable, and innovation was hindered by fear of the unknown. Every breakthrough we celebrate today exists because someone dared to think differently.

Challenging the status quo does not have to be a grand rebellion. It can be as simple as questioning an outdated process at work, rethinking how we communicate in relationships, or pushing ourselves to try something new when it feels safer to stick with what we know. It is about recognizing that just because something has always been a certain way, does not mean it is the best way.

Challenging the norm can be uncomfortable. People resist change because it forces them to step outside their comfort zones. It can be lonely at times, being the one asking questions or proposing new ideas. But if we want to move forward, individually and as a society, we need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

At the end of the day, progress depends on those willing to challenge what is always been done. Whether in business, education, or personal growth, the biggest breakthroughs happen when we dare to ask, "But why?"

So, the next time you are faced with a situation where things seem set in stone, take a moment to question it. You might be surprised at what possibilities open up when you refuse to accept "just how things are."
